Lindsay tried tech startup founding twice in her 20s, watched both companies fail, and walked away convinced she was done. Then she became her grandmother’s caregiver, and everything changed.

From ‘Failed Founder’ to Caregiver to Builder
Lindsay started her working life as a nursing assistant, moved into technology, and launched her first startup in her early 20s: a MySpace for writers, built before software-as-a-service was a paid concept. It died when she couldn’t monetize it. Her second startup, this one venture-backed, also failed, though the patents (early background-removal technology now familiar from Zoom) were sold off at the end. After that, she was done. “I am never, ever, ever doing a startup again.”
Then came her grandmother. Lindsay became her caregiver alongside her young daughter, a season she describes as deeply joyful despite its challenges. But one night, the overnight aides who insisted they were present in her grandmother’s room weren’t. Her grandmother got out of bed, fell, and broke her femur. Cameras would have stripped her of dignity. Human accountability hadn’t been enough. That was the moment Lindsay had a new idea.
What Care Bloom Does
Care Bloom is the result: a discreet, HIPAA-compliant monitoring system built around a Fitbit-style watch, room sensors, and a gateway that triangulates location and activity with 99 percent accuracy. It can tell you whether your loved one is in the shower, stuck in the basement, hasn’t moved from the couch, or hasn’t taken their medication. It can verify whether tasks were actually completed by caregivers. Research studies have shown it can prevent bed sores and improve compliance in nursing home settings. Families get the hardware free; there’s a monthly fee that covers replacements, support, and a real human on the phone when something goes wrong.
Inside the Conversation
Highlights:
- Why “perfectionism is the highest form of self-violence,” and how Lindsay shipped an admittedly ugly MVP (sensors literally screwed into plastic housings and hung on chains) to gather the real-world data she needed
- The hard truth about wrist-based fall detection, illustrated by the firemen-in-the-locker-room story that explains why Care Bloom uses a help-request button instead
- How Care Bloom got into the Cleveland Clinic through relationships and physician trust, not a three-year hospital sales cycle
- Why hardware is genuinely harder than software: value chains, chip sourcing, manufacturing, and the team that made it possible
- The shift from caregiver to care partner, and why that language preserves the underlying relationship
- What long-term care planning actually looks like beyond expensive insurance policies
What She’s Building Now
LT Care Nav is Lindsay’s newest venture, born from years of installing Care Bloom in homes and hearing families ask the same questions:
- When does mom need memory care?
- How much will this cost?
- How will I pay for it?
- Will you help me?
It’s a completely free service for families that builds a care plan, projects costs based on geography and physical condition, walks through payment options beyond long-term care insurance, and matches families to providers Lindsay has personally interviewed. Not lead generation. Curated matchmaking.
The Sandwich Generation
Lindsay speaks honestly about the sandwich generation reality. She’s living it right now, caring for her chronically ill daughter and her aging parents while running both companies. Her message to women in the thick of it: have the honest conversation with yourself first, then with your family. Become care partners, not caregivers and care recipients. And if you’re already past the point where those conversations can happen, trust that the decisions you’re making from love are the right ones.
